Elicitation and error correction methods are possibly two of the most effective skills a TEFL teacher can implement to gauge student levels, reward positive participation and maintain control within the classroom. It can not be stressed enough, how important this chapter is. Included are the 4P’s and 10 elicitation techniques that we will all use on a daily basis.
As mentioned above, the 4 P’s of Elicitation are Pose, Pause, Pounce and Praise.
Pose: Ask the question to the entire class
Pause: Create dramatic effect by waiting
Pounce: Swoop on an individual student and call out their name at the same time.
Praise: The student answers the question, praise on the student
The 10 Techniques for elicitation: Cues, Prompts, Questions, Mime, Role Plays, Synonyms, Antonyms, Realia, Sound Effects and Situations are all used to ensure your students understand the desired material. The above techniques can all be used to compliment your lesson and add a higher level of dynamics to the classroom.
As with the ten classroom management techniques, elicitation techniques can all be used in conjunction with each other, in order to concept check your students. The formulation of effective concept checking is to allow your students to demonstrate their level of understanding and knowledge of the topic/lesson.
Error correction is also important as an administrative form of control within your classroom. It is important however, to recognize that mistakes are a natural part of the leaning process and should be encouraged. Never, ever discourage your class by using humiliation or aggression. Be calm, empathetic and re-enforce positively.
