The Teaching of Math and Science

Contained within this chapter are some examples of what to expect when teaching either maths or science. The same basic principles apply to the teaching of these topics, with the introduction of specific vocabulary probably one of the most integral components. Generally, a maths or science lesson will be pre-taught in Thai: before the content is re-visited by a native English speaking teacher.

As mentioned above - the content within a science or math lesson will generally be taught in the classroom by a specialist Thai teacher - before you will be required to deliver a lesson. The course books will be in English, but will generally contain annotations in Thai to further facilitate understanding.

The same principles apply: teach from known to unknown, simple to complex, and concrete to abstract. Pre teaching vocabulary is also a very important component of math and science lessons - as the language used is very specific and can contain complex thought processes. Words such as “photosynthesis”, “evaporation”, “condensation” and “reproduction” will certainly need to be elicited before you start your lesson, in order to ensure comprehension.
