What is the typical Teach in Thailand process?

  1. Sign up for the TEFL certificate course which will provide job placement.
  2. During the second week of the course, you may receive job offers from potential employers
  3. Speak to your potential employers in person or via Skype, on Line to obtain a good feel for the offer.
  4. In the third week of the course, you will finalize your placement by picking the one that suits you best
  5. Directly (or soon after) graduation, head to your school and start earning an income as an ESL teacher

What is the difference between rural, city or beach placements?

Most everyone who attends the course wants to teach in Thailand on or near a beach however these locations become extremely competitive for foreigners wanting to live and work there. Most of these coastal beach towns are created solely for tourism thus the cost of living is extremely high for a teacher earning Thai baht and since the demand is so high with so many applicants going for the same jobs salaries are reduced lower than what can be expected. So what often happens is people find jobs in these areas, but with the cost of living being higher and salaries being lower they don’t earn enough to enjoy their time off. This scenario is usually the exact opposite of what people are looking for.

The opposite is true for somewhat rural to rural areas as the cost of living is extremely low and the salaries are higher as they value you as a teacher and want to keep you at the school. This will give you more money to go to those beach locations on the weekends and have money to enjoy yourself.

Teaching accommodation?

The typical starting salaries for teachers in Thailand depend on a couple of factors, as to which type of school, where the school is located, your nationality, and educational status however the amount of salary you receive in Thailand will be more than efficient to live a comfortable life in Thailand. As you gain valuable teaching experience both your job prospects and teaching salary will grow.

Degree holders 30,000 – 40,000 THB (Starting Salary)

Unlike countries like China, or South Korea which only allow you to work for one employer, in Thailand you can work for multiple employers per your work permit allowing you to make as much or as little as you want.

Teaching contracts and terms?

Teaching contracts in Thailand are fairly standard and require you to be present during school hours, which is usually 7:30 AM – 3:00 PM Monday through Friday. Teaching contracts depend greatly on the school and agents as to the need they have for teachers. The two main types of contracts given are either a one-term contract or a year contract. A one-term contract may not provide a salary during the school term breaks of October and April, however, the one-year contract will provide a salary during those breaks.

The first teaching term in Thailand is May – September and the second teacher term is November – March, but even though the largest intakes coincide with these term start dates such as April and October we still place teachers year-round.

Teacher dress code?

A teacher in Thailand is a professional job so you must also dress and act like a professional. Males generally dress business casual with slacks, dress shirt and tie. Females generally wear a dress or skirt, blouse and closed toe shoes. It would be best if you brought teaching clothes with you to Thailand, but if not there are plenty of western malls (and sizing) to find pretty much anything you need.

If you are of normal build and size you can pretty much shop any shopping center for clothes. If you are looking for great deals on garments then you can always visit your local China town or if in Bangkok then you should go to Baiyoke where you can find dress shirts as low as 50 Thai baht ($1.50) each.
